Overview

The “Legal English of IP Law” presents the essential law and key legal English terminology in lessons covering reading, writing, listening and speaking through on-line lessons.

The course covers the wide range of technical and legal words and phrases used in this area of law, equipping the students to work in this rapidly developing field.

The course contains units covering the essential law, which every international IP Lawyer should know in order to work effectively in this sphere. This includes the law of patents, copyright, e-commerce, domain names, design law, internet law, together with practicalal skills such as drafting IP agreements, and IP due diligence. All the teachers and trainers are either qualified British lawyers, in private practice with experience of IP Law and, as such, they understand the questions and tasks that clients are likely to ask lawyers to assist with.

The course requires 15 hours of lesson time plus another 8 – 10 hours of private study time, using inter-active study exercises submitted through the Internet and e mail, over the period of the course

Intellectual Property English Lesson 1

Trade Mark Law Language and Law of trade marks plus examples of phrases and vocabulary: copyrights, trademarks, fair use, public domain, derivative works.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 2

Trade Mark Law in practice The Law and practical methods of registration of trade marks plus the vocabulary of this area of law, e. g. Protected emblems, customary, distinctive, arbitrary, watch notice.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 3

Protection of Well-Known Trade Marks The Law and Vocabulary relating to the protection of well-known trade marks, e.g. blurring, notoriety, counterfeiting, infringement.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 4

Disputes regarding Domain Names The Law plus legal and technical language relating to disputes involving domain names, e.g. kiting, tasting, cybersquatting.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 5

Copyright Law The Law and vocabulary of basic legal principles and general policy of copyright, e g exclusive economic rights, recorded materials, first owners, moral rights.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 6

Copyright Law in Practice Contemporary topics of the law as it stands today and the legal vocabulary associated with it, e.g. exhaustion, parallel imports, moral rights.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 7

Patent Law The Law and vocabulary of basic legal principles and general policyof Patents, e g Patentability, inventive step, excluded types, industrial use specifications.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 8

Patent Law in practice The Law and vocabulary relating to modern issues in patent law e.g. State Street Case, business methods.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 9

IP Contracts and Agreements The necessary vocabulary and phrases needed to discuss and agree terms of IP contracts negotiating and drafting agreements such as naked licenses, royalty payments, Licence in.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 10

Designs Design law and vocabulary.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 11

Modern Issues affecting IP and IT Law and practice the vocabulary of the modern law and practice of IT and IP, e.g. Knowledge exchange, knowledge transfer providers, intra-net.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 12

Competition Language used to describe the basics of competition law (examples: collusion, cartels, predatory pricing, tying).

Intellectual Property English Lesson 13

E-Commerce The Law and Language of Intellectual Property as it affects E-Commerce e.g. intra-net, aggregator, application service provider, Business Process Re-engineering.

Geographical Indications and Parallel Imports s The Law and vocabulary relating to this area of business.

Intellectual Property English Lesson 15

Due Diligence in IP Law The legal language of IP and the matters which must be covered in due diligence for IP, e. g. exploitability, Non Infringement Investigation, non-competition agreements. Final Examination Full test of the law and vocabulary used in the course

As some of the other students will almost certainly be in other cities, and even different Countries and time zones we try to agree a mutually convenient time for all the students in the group. We are happy to time the lessons for the weekends, or public holidays, if this is what the students want.
